Bill draft 1080, as presented to the Maine Legislature by Representative Alan M. Casavant (D- Biddeford), could criminalize bear trapping and bear hunting with dogs.

In a news report from the U.S. Sportsmen's Alliance, the hunting advocate group quotes, Skip Trask, of the Maine Trapper's Association. Skip says,

“Maine has more bears per square mile of habitat than any other state and the population is continuing to expand. This fact doesn’t matter to animal extremists who try to attack our bear harvesting methods every chance they get,” said Skip Trask with the Maine Trappers Association.  “Trapping and hunting with dogs are important and necessary tools for managing our large black bear population.”

For more details on this bill and how you can help visit the U.S. Sportsmen's Alliance website.

Muskoka Outdoors Opinion:

This news hits home for me.  Ontario saw it's government cave to anti-hunting propaganda and pressure to eliminate a spring bear hunt.  Despite a strong and healthy black bear population, perceived public backlash, during an election year, removed a cost-effective management tool. It is one thing to stop hunting when population numbers are being impacted negatively, but another thing to stop hunting at the whim, and demand, of anti-hunting groups.

I hope Maine can end this bill from being passed.

Mark Bonokowski has an interesting blog in the Toronto Sun. He kept track of the 13 ridings where candidates promised to get rid of the gun registry and then back tracked to see if doing so cost them their seats. It only cost 3 of the 13 their seats in a Tory wipe out of the Liberals which means that one again Canada's organized shooters such as OFAH failed to show up for the fight. We have only Harper and the Torys to thank if he gets rid of the long gun registry as he has promised.

Organizations with the name Federation in them in Canada are essentially impotent and waiting for goverment handouts from any party in power(for not rocking the boat)like good little boys.

Victory Bill! Victory! I have been waiting to get rid of the gun registry since its inception. Now I can die in peace. The ones who are already gone can now stop spinning in their graves.

Election day on Monday Bill. Its important. Every hunter or shooter out there needs to vote Tory, especially those in the Liberal and NDP ridings where the members promised to oppose the gun registry and then lied to their constituents. None of these MPs can be counted on. They lied once. They will do it again. Get rid of them. Easy to do.

At one time the National Geographic Society had credibility. This was in magazine days 40 years ago. In recent years they have been taking money from the HSUS to make their films which has created huge bias. Your readers should be aware that the National Geographic Society films can no longer be taken seriously.

A most important aspect of wildlife management is flexibilty which includes when and how to hold hunting seasona. A constant of the animal rights people is an attempt to induce inflexibility into the system to make management impossible. Its a wrecking ball approach. Like most truly inflexible people the animal rights movement is essentially fascist in nature. They have a need to impose their will on others even if it is harmful.
