Stouffville's Ringwood Fish Hatchery Station is poised to win big in an online grant competition from Aviva Insurance. The hatchery and the volunteer anglers, the Metro East Anglers (MEA) Club, are just a few votes away from winning a portion of $1000000 provide by the insurance company. Currently, the MEA's proposal has made it to the semi-final round of the competition.
Voting for this round starts today - Monday December 5, 2011. Consider voting now.
Recent reduction in funding from various government and non-government sources has made it difficult for the Metro East Anglers to re-stock, find viable salmon eggs and operation the Ringwood Hatchery. The volunteer fish conservation warriors report that their efforts have paid off in recent months:
"This fall these efforts paid off with the first notable returns of Coho into the Credit River in years. Today we are happy to report we have thousands of Coho returning to the Credit River to gather our required eggs from. However, we have seen firsthand how this can all change quickly if Coho are not supported. We will also be raising 25 000 Brown Trout and 17 000 Rainbow Trout. All species are destined for stocking into local area streams and rivers."
