2011 Outdoor Canada Show
The 2011 Great Outdoors and DIY (Do-it-yourself) weekend is set for November 25-27, 2011 at the International Centre in Toronto, Ontario. The uniquely Canadian 'flavored' Outdoor Show is the combined effort of four media leading, Canadian magazines: Cottage Life, Canadian Home Workshop, Explore, and my personal favourite - Outdoor Canada. The end result is a show that will appeal to a huge variety of outdoor enthusiasts. One ticket gives you exclusive entrance to all 4 venues!
Each magazine contributes their own content-specific exhibits, workshops, and celebrities to the exciting whole of the show. Depending on schedules, visitors can expect to see super-charged featured events like:
-Meeting Survivor Champion Rob Mariano (Saturday, November 26 at 11am)
-The thrill of an indoor Zip Line (with age, height and weight considerations)
-Meet Women of the Outdoors (Vanessa Harrop, Amanda Lynn Mayhew-Hare, Kathryn Maroun, and Mariko Izumi)
-Kids Crooked Christmas Village and Kids Fishing and Camping Area
-Meet your favourite celebrity anglers and hunters in the Outdoor Canada Lodge
-For a complete listing of other features and events (with schedules) visit the Outdoor Weekend Website
I enjoy the show because of it's timing in the year. It comes just as the apex of a 2011 hunting season begins to wind down. The show infuses a renewed excitement (at least for me) for hunting and fishing that keeps you looking forward to your next spring hunting and fishing opportunity.
Tickets cost $15 at the door for adults (18+). However, if you purchase your tickets online - you can SAVE $2! Follow this link to buy your tickets now.
California signs gun registration bill
According to the U.S. Sportsmen's Alliance (USSA), the state of California, and its Governor Jerry Brown, have signed a new law requiring all firearms be registered with the state. The USSA article reports that,
"The bill, Assembly Bill 809, applies the state’s current handgun registration requirements to all firearms, including rifles and shotguns commonly used by sportsmen for hunting and recreational shooting. Sportsmen will now have to provide the state a laundry list of personal information anytime they buy or transfer a firearm. The information includes their name, address, place of birth, telephone number, and occupation as well as a detailed description of the handgun and the gun’s serial number." Entire Article Here
Muskoka Outdoors Opinion - The state of California must have some big dollars to waste. Especially, since the cost of Canada's gun registry is a waste of tax payer money - currently at billion plus dollars. I trust the criminals, terrorists, and other gun-crime idiots will be the first to register so that California can feel safer with a law that only targets law-abiding citizens. Perhaps, the Governor could watch this video about the questionable effectiveness of gun registries.
Legal gun owner sues Toronto Police
According to a Globe and Mail news report, Toronto resident and legal gun owner (and collector), Peter Sedge, was removed from his home at gunpoint by Toronto police in May, 2008. His 120 legally stored, and collected, guns were seized by police as well. All 14 firearm related charges were dropped 10 months later and his guns returned. The lawsuit has named Toronto police and the individuals who told police about his large gun collection.
Mr. Sedge, through his lawyers, told the Globe and Mail that,
"... the arrest “completely unnecessary” because his client was licensed and had no criminal record. Ontario’s chief firearms officer, who is in charge of licensing, could have been called in to inspect the site or confirm Mr. Sedge’s licence and registration..." Entire Globe and Mail Article Here
Muskoka Outdoors is curious to see how this law suit will play out. What bothers me about the story, as reported, are a few glaring questions that need to be asked:
- With a billion dollar-plus long gun registry in place, that police 'SAY' they check on 'every' call, you would think the fact that the man was a legal gun collector and owner would be noted before the raid?
- Why a raid on a legal gun owner with no prior criminal charges? Why not arrive with the proper paperwork and inspection team at a more appropriate time of day. This is only speculation, but I doubt the person 'reporting' on Mr. Sedge called police minutes before midnight.
- Should legal gun owners be worried that a raid will homing in on their private residences in very much the same way they occur for drug, gang and other criminal shake-downs? I would say yes. It happened in British Columbia, in 2008, for example. Four men were removing their encased firearms from their vehicle when a 'do-gooder' called it in. The men and long-guns were seized shortly after - then released. Read about that incident here.
Meanwhile, back in the world of crime and illegal gun users, the Liberal long gun registry is not even a concern. Police don't know where their guns are...

Quebec considers gun registry
With Canada's Harper Government finally able to target, and possibly end, the country's costly gun registry, the province of Quebec is considering implementing it's own firearm registry. A CBC news website article reports that Quebec's Security Minister, Robert Dutil, is evaluating the Province's options. The CBC article quotes Mr. Dutil,
"Certainly the people in the department have been told to look at all possibilities and to see how we could react to any number of circumstances...for the moment, there is still a [federal] law, no bill has been tabled, so we haven't seen the content, but we think we have good arguments for keeping the long-gun registry." A CTV News report also reveals that Nova Scotia Premiere, Darrell Dexter, has also investigated creating their own provincial registry. The Provincial Leader feels this initiative would be too costly.
American hunters win public land ruling
Without acting to appeal by Monday June 13, 2011, the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) will not be able to proceed with a lawsuit that could have closed hunting on National Wildlife Refuge System land parcels.
A recent press release from the U.S. Sportsmen's Alliance, a group dedicated to protecting the rights of sportsmen, shares that,
"This long-running case began in 2003, when the Fund for Animals, which later merged with the HSUS, filed a lawsuit to stop hunting on 39 refuges. The U.S. Sportsmen's Alliance Foundation (USSAF), along with other organizations, intervened on behalf of sportsmen. Anti-hunting groups later expanded the lawsuit to nearly 60 refuges. USSAF defended this case for eight years, through many rounds of hard-fought and costly briefing, providing stability in the defense as the U.S. attorneys assigned to the case changed frequently over that time. Judge Gwin’s April 2011 ruling stopped HSUS' attempt at using the National Environmental Policy Act to close hunting on these refuges. In making the decision, the judge noted that “Plaintiffs, however, are not entitled to an inviolate sanctuary for their preferred uses – Congress has determined that, to the extent possible, hunters, fishers, observers, photographers, and educators must share the refuge.” The 1997 Refuge Improvement Act, championed by the USSA, made hunting, fishing and other wildlife oriented activities priority uses on refuge units. The Act also mandated hunting and fishing activities be "facilitated"."

Maine bill could criminalize bear hunting and trapping
Bill draft 1080, as presented to the Maine Legislature by Representative Alan M. Casavant (D- Biddeford), could criminalize bear trapping and bear hunting with dogs.
In a news report from the U.S. Sportsmen's Alliance, the hunting advocate group quotes, Skip Trask, of the Maine Trapper's Association. Skip says,
“Maine has more bears per square mile of habitat than any other state and the population is continuing to expand. This fact doesn’t matter to animal extremists who try to attack our bear harvesting methods every chance they get,” said Skip Trask with the Maine Trappers Association. “Trapping and hunting with dogs are important and necessary tools for managing our large black bear population.”
For more details on this bill and how you can help visit the U.S. Sportsmen's Alliance website.
Muskoka Outdoors Opinion:
This news hits home for me. Ontario saw it's government cave to anti-hunting propaganda and pressure to eliminate a spring bear hunt. Despite a strong and healthy black bear population, perceived public backlash, during an election year, removed a cost-effective management tool. It is one thing to stop hunting when population numbers are being impacted negatively, but another thing to stop hunting at the whim, and demand, of anti-hunting groups.
I hope Maine can end this bill from being passed.
