Help Ringwood Fish Hatchery win big
Stouffville's Ringwood Fish Hatchery Station is poised to win big in an online grant competition from Aviva Insurance. The hatchery and the volunteer anglers, the Metro East Anglers (MEA) Club, are just a few votes away from winning a portion of $1000000 provide by the insurance company. Currently, the MEA's proposal has made it to the semi-final round of the competition.
Voting for this round starts today - Monday December 5, 2011. Consider voting now.
Recent reduction in funding from various government and non-government sources has made it difficult for the Metro East Anglers to re-stock, find viable salmon eggs and operation the Ringwood Hatchery. The volunteer fish conservation warriors report that their efforts have paid off in recent months:
"This fall these efforts paid off with the first notable returns of Coho into the Credit River in years. Today we are happy to report we have thousands of Coho returning to the Credit River to gather our required eggs from. However, we have seen firsthand how this can all change quickly if Coho are not supported. We will also be raising 25 000 Brown Trout and 17 000 Rainbow Trout. All species are destined for stocking into local area streams and rivers."
Take a moment to to visit the competition page and learn more about the vote and MEA's opportunity.
2011 Outdoor Canada Show
The 2011 Great Outdoors and DIY (Do-it-yourself) weekend is set for November 25-27, 2011 at the International Centre in Toronto, Ontario. The uniquely Canadian 'flavored' Outdoor Show is the combined effort of four media leading, Canadian magazines: Cottage Life, Canadian Home Workshop, Explore, and my personal favourite - Outdoor Canada. The end result is a show that will appeal to a huge variety of outdoor enthusiasts. One ticket gives you exclusive entrance to all 4 venues!
Each magazine contributes their own content-specific exhibits, workshops, and celebrities to the exciting whole of the show. Depending on schedules, visitors can expect to see super-charged featured events like:
-Meeting Survivor Champion Rob Mariano (Saturday, November 26 at 11am)
-The thrill of an indoor Zip Line (with age, height and weight considerations)
-Meet Women of the Outdoors (Vanessa Harrop, Amanda Lynn Mayhew-Hare, Kathryn Maroun, and Mariko Izumi)
-Kids Crooked Christmas Village and Kids Fishing and Camping Area
-Meet your favourite celebrity anglers and hunters in the Outdoor Canada Lodge
-For a complete listing of other features and events (with schedules) visit the Outdoor Weekend Website
I enjoy the show because of it's timing in the year. It comes just as the apex of a 2011 hunting season begins to wind down. The show infuses a renewed excitement (at least for me) for hunting and fishing that keeps you looking forward to your next spring hunting and fishing opportunity.
Tickets cost $15 at the door for adults (18+). However, if you purchase your tickets online - you can SAVE $2! Follow this link to buy your tickets now.
Canadian Arctic Char potential tippet class record
A hooked Canadian arctic char is potentially a new world record for the 2kg (4lb) tippet class of the IGFA fishing record system. On a recent release of the IGFA's Hot Catches news release, the fishing record keeper shares that:
"This year, Bluch and Harrison fished Canada’s Tree River, which produced two pending Arctic char (Salvelinus alpines) tippet class records for Bluch. The bigger of the two was this 9.64 kg (21 lb 4 oz) beauty caught on August 13, 2011 while casting a Dumbell Strip Tease fly. After a 20 minute fight, the angler and guide combo were able to weigh and release the potential 02 kg (4 lb) tippet class record fish. The current IGFA record is 7.17 kg (15 lb 13 oz)."
Nice fish Mr. Bluch!
California signs gun registration bill
According to the U.S. Sportsmen's Alliance (USSA), the state of California, and its Governor Jerry Brown, have signed a new law requiring all firearms be registered with the state. The USSA article reports that,
"The bill, Assembly Bill 809, applies the state’s current handgun registration requirements to all firearms, including rifles and shotguns commonly used by sportsmen for hunting and recreational shooting. Sportsmen will now have to provide the state a laundry list of personal information anytime they buy or transfer a firearm. The information includes their name, address, place of birth, telephone number, and occupation as well as a detailed description of the handgun and the gun’s serial number." Entire Article Here
Muskoka Outdoors Opinion - The state of California must have some big dollars to waste. Especially, since the cost of Canada's gun registry is a waste of tax payer money - currently at billion plus dollars. I trust the criminals, terrorists, and other gun-crime idiots will be the first to register so that California can feel safer with a law that only targets law-abiding citizens. Perhaps, the Governor could watch this video about the questionable effectiveness of gun registries.
Canada's Fish and Wildlife Conservation Congress 2012
Canada's first National Fish and Wildlife Conservation Congress will be hosted at the Westin Hotel in Ottawa, May 27-31, 2012. According to the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters this Canadian Congress will:
"... bring together leading fish and wildlife scientists, government leaders, federal, provincial, state and local fish and wildlife agencies, conservation organizations and anglers and hunters to participate in plenary sessions, workshops, discussions and debates about the future of fish and wildlife resources in North America. If you manage or study fish and game populations, are involved in the outdoor community or your lifestyle depends on the sustainable use of fish and wildlife populations, you will want to join us in Ottawa, May 27 – 31, 2012." Legal gun owner sues Toronto Police
According to a Globe and Mail news report, Toronto resident and legal gun owner (and collector), Peter Sedge, was removed from his home at gunpoint by Toronto police in May, 2008. His 120 legally stored, and collected, guns were seized by police as well. All 14 firearm related charges were dropped 10 months later and his guns returned. The lawsuit has named Toronto police and the individuals who told police about his large gun collection.
Mr. Sedge, through his lawyers, told the Globe and Mail that,
"... the arrest “completely unnecessary” because his client was licensed and had no criminal record. Ontario’s chief firearms officer, who is in charge of licensing, could have been called in to inspect the site or confirm Mr. Sedge’s licence and registration..." Entire Globe and Mail Article Here
Muskoka Outdoors is curious to see how this law suit will play out. What bothers me about the story, as reported, are a few glaring questions that need to be asked:
- With a billion dollar-plus long gun registry in place, that police 'SAY' they check on 'every' call, you would think the fact that the man was a legal gun collector and owner would be noted before the raid?
- Why a raid on a legal gun owner with no prior criminal charges? Why not arrive with the proper paperwork and inspection team at a more appropriate time of day. This is only speculation, but I doubt the person 'reporting' on Mr. Sedge called police minutes before midnight.
- Should legal gun owners be worried that a raid will homing in on their private residences in very much the same way they occur for drug, gang and other criminal shake-downs? I would say yes. It happened in British Columbia, in 2008, for example. Four men were removing their encased firearms from their vehicle when a 'do-gooder' called it in. The men and long-guns were seized shortly after - then released. Read about that incident here.
Meanwhile, back in the world of crime and illegal gun users, the Liberal long gun registry is not even a concern. Police don't know where their guns are...
Bob Izumi's first U.S. tournament win
Canada's fishing legend, Bob Izumi, scored his first U.S. bass fishing tournament win last week. Bob won the EverStart Series Northern Division event on 1000 Islands (July 28 - 30, 2011). WFN reports that his three-day bass total was 15 bass that massed a substantial 58 pounds and 1 ounce.
The WFN article shares Izumi's tackle secret for his historic event:
"... he [Izumi] caught all of his tournament fish in 24 to 42 feet of water using a drop-shot rig tipped with a 3-inch watermelon pearl Gulp! Minnow or a 3-inch green pumpkin Gulp! Fry. His rig consisted of a ½- to 5/8-ounce weight on 10-pound-test Trilene Fluorocarbon and either a G. Loomis or Shimano Crucial drop-shot rod." Entire WFN article here
Congratulations Bob!
*I was able to exchange emails with Bob last November with a set of interview questions. His responses are here.
Toothy fish bites cottager's foot
Lake Vernon has recently been the site of a bizarre fish bite in a normally peaceful cottage setting. Muskoka's Cottage Country Now recently reported that on July 15, 2011 a swimming pre-schooler's foot was bitten by a fish while in the water with her parents. The youngster was taken to local Huntsville Hospital for treatment to multiple foot lacerations. The article suggests that the child's recent pedicure may have precipitated the rare attack:
"The mother suspects the toddler’s fancy pedicure may have had something to do with the attack; Anika’s toenails were brightly painted and decorated with butterfly stencils. Her wiggling, sparkly toes may have seemed like a delicious morsel to the hungry predator swimming by." Entire article and photos at Cottage Country Now
The young cottager is expected to completely recover.
Muskoka Outdoors theorizes that the offending fish was a Northern Pike (photo above) as it is the only fish species, in Lake Vernon, that is capable of these kind of injuries. Muskie are not currently present in the lake. We are fully capable to reduce and eliminate any hostile pike near your docks.
