Be sure to remember the Hope (Luke 2:1-20) that Christmas brings and take some time to reflect on the past that brought you here. I hope we quickly get some winter snow so that we can all create some new Christmas memories.
Photo was taken at dad's cabin - Moose Lodge (circa 2010).
Discussing the miss
Those of us fortunate enough to hunt and/or enjoy the outdoors with family members can appreciate that the time after the hunt are often more memorable than the greatest moments during the hunt. After a 'special assignment' at a friend's farm, dad and I took some time discuss why we missed our shots.
*for the Safety Consultants out there - both our firearms were unloaded.
Lake Vernon early morning fog
Sometimes the view is better closer to home. On our way to Algonquin Park, last Saturday, we had to get our canoe from dad's cottage on Lake Vernon. We almost stayed to fish it instead. Views like this can be better than a morning coffee.
Moon rise over Lake Muskoka
Those of us who spend evenings on Muskoka Lakes are often rewarded with more than fantastic sunrises or sunsets. A fishing moon stamps the end of a rewarding day and acts as a dock beacon on a return trip back. Thanks for this great Lake Muskoka photo Nigel!
Extreme Weather Trout
I have this theory about spring lake trout. The more extreme the weather, the more extreme the bite. Check out these great lake trout photos from angling friend Jeff (with Tom). They braved some nasty snowy weather in a canoe in their quest for spring trout. It paid off!
Strategically, these guys did not tell me where they caught these fish. However, judging by some of the landmarks along the shore and lake access, I would say a local Huntsville lake...

Get some pictures of your own spring trout and I would be happy to post them. I am getting information suggesting that the smelt are running and they attract big trout. Find where a smelt creek empties into your favourite lake - and hold on to your fishing rod.
The hardest part about fishing is waiting for the fish to bite. Most times, the fish don't have to show up for a fishing moment to be remembered. Fishing can be great because of the people your share the moment with.
Inquisitive Doe
This Muskoka doe watches for the photographer's next move. She apparently has been 'wintering' very well. I appreciate the time Aaron took to email me this photo.
If you have an outdoor or wildlife photo you would like me to post, please email it to me at the email listed below this post.
Most times, the closest we ever get to a ghost buck is proof that they had recently walked in a certain direction. This Muskoka buck led me through some thick forest growth until I lost him in the grasses of large pond. An area I now call, The Lair of the Swamp King.
In hunting (unlike grocery store meat) the advantage always goes to the prey. I captured dad in this photo trying to read 'the signs' of a deer that managed to slip between us after an early morning hunt. This deer track slipped into an area of forest we have nicknamed 'The Bermuda Triangle'. Deer seem to disappear off all tracking maps when entering this small section of thick, entangling cover behind the camp. Notice our standard-issue Muskoka hunting wear: hunter orange and blue jeans. This classic look will have you pros shaking your heads, but these obvious colours are easy on the budget and Muskoka deer are used to it (lol).
