Our Deer Camp Our Deer Camp Photo - Bill Anderson (via Game Cam #6)

There is a magic to the evening before the deer opener in a hunt camp. I have watched grown men toss and turn, like kids on Christmas eve, excited and anticipating what the coming day will bring. I don’t think I have ever slept more than 2 hours on the night before deer season and it can get horribly boring while you are lying horizontal in the infernal heat of the camp stove.

In anticipation of another sleepless opening night, I have brainstormed a small list of some things you could do to help pass the time.

Feel free to comment with some of your own – keep them clean.

-clean and oil your firearm beside the camp lantern

-count mice in the rafters

-throw darts at mice in rafters

-add wood to the stove

-cool down outside with rest of the gang because of too much wood in the stove

-take a stroll to the outhouse without a light

-test your new GPS because you walked past the outhouse without a light

-throw a sock a the hound

-show the hound a piece of your venison jerky

-place a piece of venison jerky on a pillow, in a lower bunk, and watch what happens with the, now awake and drooling, hound

-clean your friend’s firearm

-make bear noises and scratch the wall

-eat peanuts in your bunk

-throw pieces of peanut shell at everyone else who is ‘sleeping’.

Happy 2011 deer season everyone!
